The purpose of this assignment was to show photo retouching skills on a photo. On this photo, I learned to remove/ blacken a background, and smooth spots that are unwanted. In my opinion, this assignment was difficult for me. I feel that this assignment has made me an overall better photo shopper because I now know the importance of fully highlighting a subject. Before:After:From this assignment, I learned a lot of patience. I think that this took me a lot of time because I like to do things quickly, and photoshop requires a lot of time and precise effort. One thing that I became really familiar with is the quick shortcuts. I think these will be helpful to me in the future with photoshop.

This is the second photo assignment. For this assignment, I chose to take a portrait photo. I wanted to do this to capture the personality of my subjects. I photographed my younger brother and my friend for this assignment. I thought that doing portrait photography would be easier than it actually was. It is quite difficult to make subjects appear natural. Even though the sky was very cloudy, I like how the photo captures that there was a nice day outside. aperture: f 4.0 shutter speed: 1/2000 ISO: 1250 For this assignment, I learned that it is very difficult to make a portrait photo appear natural. You need to constantly change your aperture and shutter speed to conform with how the weather changes. This particular day was nice outside, but it was a bit chilly. This caused my subjects to become less compliant, making the photo taking process quicker than I would have liked. Overall, I learned that you must be adaptable as a photographer.
For photo two I am hoping to capture a portrait photo. I want to work on using aperture to highlight a subject. For the subject, I will most likely use a photo of my brother. Below are the links to the types of photos I am going to attempt to capture. https://www.google.com/search?q=portrait+photography&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi73Oq5q-nhAhXnRd8KHb2cDFgQ_AUIDigB&biw=1920&bih=1001#imgrc=iUlXXt96O2o7BM: https://www.google.com/search?q=portrait+photography&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi73Oq5q-nhAhXnRd8KHb2cDFgQ_AUIDigB&biw=1920&bih=1001#imgrc=Fv49FHeiO0xmBM: https://www.google.com/search?q=portrait+photography&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi73Oq5q-nhAhXnRd8KHb2cDFgQ_AUIDigB&biw=1920&bih=1001#imgrc=YC7dVbn7FGUR5M: I chose these photos for inspiration because I like the way they play with light to highlight different angles of the face and show creativity. I want to expand my photography skills to be more creative. I think that attempting portrait photography will push me to improve my technical abilities.
For this assignment, we were required to choose one photo of ourselves to change the color and saturation. Once the photo was copied 4 times over, it was arranged in quadrants to appear like Andy Warhol's original pop art piece. Next, we changed the colors to contrast one another. This was my original photo for pop art #1 This was my original photo for pop art #2. From this assignment, I learned that following directions is very important. I think that I learned how to manage photoshop and make sure the photos were centered. I learned that filters look nice if they each have the same exposure and saturation, but not necessarily the same hue.
I chose to take a picture of a product because I have an interest in marketing. I have often heard that the way a product appears affects the marketability. I chose to take a photo of this specific book because I am a coauthor. To capture the below image, I played with angles, aperture, and lighting in the room. Aperture: F/3.4 Shutter Speed: 1/60 seconds ISO:800 From this assignment, I learned that a product can look very different based on the different way it is positioned and placed. I found that I liked the way the bright yellow cover popped when contrasted against a black background. I did this by turning off all of the lights, and then shining a flashlight onto the lightbulb on the cover. I think that I did a good job of focusing into the center of the cover and highlighting one specific part. For example, because I took my best photo from a lower perspective, the title is less emphasized in comparison to the lightbulb in the center.
For my first assignment, I have chosen to draw inspiration from Still Life/ Product. I am hoping to better my marketing skills of my new book, iAware. I think the best way I can do this is by changing my perspective and exposure.
Some photos that I will use as inspiration are below: https://www.google.com/search?q=photos+of+book&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwin3u_en9XhAhVKmlkKHZfLAWkQ_AUIDigB&biw=1920&bih=1001#imgrc=x3IxmOips5us2M: http://www.venusinarms.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/FullSizeRender.jpg https://business.linkedin.com/marketing-solutions/blog/marketing-book-worth-a-look/2017/marketing-book-worth-a-look--positioning--the-battle-for-your-mi Personally, I feel like these are great examples of product advertisement. I like how the first photo uses aperture to focus on the book itself. I think this would be a good marketing technique. Assignment DescriptionThe purpose of this assignment was to begin the basics of photography. We were asked to research and take notes on 11 goals for photos. We then implemented these techniques by taking photos around Saline High School. First, we took photos using Rule of Thirds, Pattern, Symmetry, Texture, Depth of Field, Lines, Framing, Perspective, Space, Balance and Color. Then, I selected the best photo from each category and decided to make this blog post. The techniques implemented are shown below. Forming this block post was the final part of the assignment. Rule of ThirdsFor this photo, I turned the grid mode onto my camera. Then, I placed the fooseball table on the top right line. I did this to focus the image onto the table and add emphasis onto the table. PatternThe purpose behind this photo, for me, was to show the form the awards take on the wall. I got very close to them to make the point of focus the center of the photo. SymmetryThis photo shows symmetry because four doors, equal in size, are all open. I closed one door to shift the focus of the image and emphasize the closed door. This photo can symbolize "just because one door is closed, doesn't mean others are not open." TextureI chose this photo for texture because I thought there was a nice contrast between textures. The smooth surface of the table coupled with the rough, jagged surface of the cookies demonstrates an overall difference. The rough texture of the cookies adds depth to the image. Depth of FieldI chose this photo for depth of field because it shows the depth the school has. Standing on the first floor, I am contrasting the first rod (2nd floor) to the next (3rd floor). I like this photo for depth of field because it portrays the school as large and continuous. LinesThis photo uses straight lines to show the focus point of the door at the end of the straight. I find this picture interesting because it highlights that there is always an ending point that may take you to a new opportunity. Framing For this photo, I had Julie stand in the frame of a mirror to capture a photo of her. I thought this was interesting because it was a more creative approach for taking a portrait. PerspectiveI took this photo from an upward perspective to try and make the plant appear larger than it actually is. I think this photo emphasizes that plants are a major part of our world because of how big I made it appear in this picture. Space For this photo, I zoomed in on the flags to allow minimal space. When students are typically sitting in the commons, they see the flags with a lot of space around them. This gives a different perspective, and makes the flags appear more prominent. BalanceThis photo shows balance because the two water fountains are equal with one another. This makes the photo appear equal and balanced. ColorI chose this photo for color because it portrays diverse, bright colors. I think that the amount of colors used are interesting because the eye is still drawn to the closest flowers because of the angle I took the photo. What did I learn? From this assignment, I learned that there is technique behind photography. Before, I would simply take photos of things I thought "looked cool." Now, I approach photography with a different angle, no pun intended. I now know 11 unique techniques that I can employ in my day to day photography. My favorite photo that I took was probably my Rule of thirds photo. I never knew that positioning of subjects was so important. By positioning my subject at an angle, I was able to add emphasis. I am really proud of this assignment.
Hi, I'm Lauryn Humphreys. Welcome to my digital photography blog, This year, I am a senior at Saline High School, where I am involved in Debate, Dance Team, Key Club, and Student Council. Outside of school, I am involved in competitive figure skating and synchronized skating, and love to read. If you love to read as much as I do, you should buy iAware, my new book on tackling the college application process.
I chose to take this class because I don't know much about photography. I wanted to broaden my academic horizons with a more creative course. Activation of flow state work is beneficial to the neural plasticity between left and right hemispheres of the brain. I am excited to try my best in this class. |
